Steak Night at HK on the Bay

When people come to visit me in Virginia Beach, I strive to take them places they can’t experience anywhere else. My friend Elyse has visited me three times now, and each time I want to make sure she gets a taste of some of my favorite local restaurants.

While I was preparing a list of places to take her for dinner on Thursday, Oct. 3, I decided to check the weekly specials at a few restaurants. It had been a while since I had been to HK on the Bay. On their website, HK advertises daily specials for food and drinks. As I was browsing the offerings, including all-you-can-eat wings on Mondays and prime rib on Wednesdays, I knew Elyse would love the Thursday special.

Every Thursday night, HK on the Bay offers a Steak Night. Diners get their choice of a cut of all-natural, steroid-free, humanely treated beef that is hand-cut to order. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were given the Steak Night menu. We were able to check off items to create our entire meal, from the steak’s toppings to the side dishes.

In our typical twinning fashion, Elyse and I both ordered the same exact meal. We selected a 12 ounce ribeye, cooked medium, topped with a garlic and herb compound butter with a side of the horseradish demi, each for $1 extra. HK also offers accoutrements for your meat, such as sautéed mushrooms, seafood and you can even wrap your steak in bacon. These extras cost between $1–$3 and $10 for HK’s “famous Maryland crab cake.”

While my eagerness to eat the steak made it feel like things were moving in slow motion, it actually didn’t take long to receive our food. Our steaks came out hot and perfectly cooked. The quality of the beef and its marbling created a wonderfully tender steak. The compound butter added more flavor between the smoky char of the grill marks. The horseradish demi tasted just like a beef gravy, with notes of horseradish that wasn’t too overwhelming. Our steak was complemented by mashed potatoes and vibrant green beans. Of course we made sure to run our side dishes through the remaining steak juice on the plate.

HK prices the steaks on Steak Night by the ounce. The total for our meal, with the butter and homemade sauce, was about $30. I was completely stuffed at the end of our meal making it worth the money if it had cost more, but for a steak dinner with a high quality piece of meat, it was a great deal.
