Weathered Souls Brewing Co. Opens in Charlotte
For someone who claims to not drink beer, I sure got my fix at Charlotte’s newest brewery, Weathered Souls Brewing Co. The San Antonio-based brewery opened its second taproom this weekend, Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022, in Charlotte’s South End. Weathered Souls’ opening was highly anticipated, as it is currently Charlotte’s only Black-owned brewery.

In an interview with the Charlotte Business Journal, Marcus Baskerville, co-founder of Weathered Souls, said “It’s [Charlotte] a fantastic craft beer market. We actually looked at opening in Charlotte six years ago.”
Weathered Souls specializes in stouts, especially their innovative pastry stouts. In addition to beer, the 10,000-square-foot space will also offer cocktails in the LoSo Craft Cocktail lounge and feature a food menu curated by local chef and James Beard Award finalist Greg Collier, of the well-known restaurant Leah & Louise.
By spring, the brewery would also like to utilize its additional space as a coffee bar serving “Black is Beautiful” coffee. If that name sounds familiar, Baskerville started the Black is Beautiful initiative that swept breweries across the country in 2020, raising awareness for the injustices that many people of color face along with funds for local organizations that support equality and inclusion.
Weathered Souls Brewing Co. Parking Information
Weathered Souls has a small parking lot in front of the brewery. I found free street parking around the block, but there is also a park-and-ride lot at Scaleybark Station, which is a short walk away.
Beer at Weathered Souls Brewing Co.
I had the opportunity to get a sneak peek at the brewery the night before its grand opening.
For years, I’ve said “I don’t like beer.” However, I was just ordering the wrong beer. I am proud to declare that Weathered Souls has made me a beer believer, and I’ve truly been sleeping on some quality brews.
When I walked up to the bar, I met Wendy who was nice enough to break down Weathered Souls’ on-tap options for me. She explained that none of Weathered Souls’ beers were “too hoppy,” which was perfect because I get indigestion.
She recommended that I try one of their flagship beers, the Dale Shine, a Mexican-style lager. This light, fresh beer really made me feel like a true beer drinker. While it was rainy and breezy outside, I could totally picture myself sipping a Dale Shine outside on my front porch after a long day.
I went back to Wendy for another recommendation, and she asked me if I liked sour beers. The sours I’ve tried in the past were too bitter, which left a bad taste in my mouth, but I trusted her. She poured me a purple-hued Simply Blue Lemonade sour. Housed in a can modeled after the Simply Lemonade-brand label, this beer tasted just like a tart blueberry lemonade. I’ll definitely be going back for a pack of that beer and keeping an eye out for Weathered Souls’ other Simply-style sour releases.
I was very impressed that I didn’t get the hiccups after those two beers (usually one beer does it for me). I didn’t feel full and heavy after drinking them and, the best part, no indigestion! I can certainly see why Weathered Souls’ beers are so highly praised. There’s a beer for every palate at Weathered Souls Brewing Co.
Weathered Souls Brewing Co. is located at 255 Clanton Road, Charlotte.
