Virginia is for Restaurant Lovers Takeout Week
Support Local Restaurants during COVID-19
It goes without saying that the coronavirus, aka ‘rona or Miss. Rona, has altered the lives of everyone across the world. From health concerns to hoarding toilet paper and ground beef, the effects of COVID-19 have completely disrupted our regular routines. While almost every industry has been affected, as a food blogger, I think most about local restaurants.
We quickly saw how ‘rona nearly upended the restaurant industry across the country. With government officials declaring the closures of food establishments, to facilitate social distancing and better sanitary practices, countless restaurants found a way around this. Many restaurants have stayed open while offering diners delivery, carry out and curbside takeout.
In Virginia, diners are encouraged to order from their favorite local eateries during Virginia is for Restaurant Lovers Takeout Week, March 30–April 5.
About Virginia is for Restaurant Lovers Takeout Week
The Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC) and Virginia Restaurant, Lodging and Travel Association (VRLTA) are asking diners, who are able to participate, to order takeout, delivery or curbside pickup from area restaurants throughout the week.
“Virginia's restaurant industry has been hit especially hard during this time," said Eric Terry, president of VRLTA, in a press release. “Restaurants are so vital to our economy and we encourage those, who can afford to do so, to continue to help out these establishments that have helped to put Virginia on the map.”
Supporting Local Businesses in Coastal Virginia
While I’ve certainly been balling on a budget and reminding myself that “there’s food at home,” I absolutely love the restaurants in Coastal Virginia. On the weekends, I treat myself to the offerings of some of my favorite local eateries.
Last week, I ordered tacos online from Bro’s Fish Tacos and had my order brought to me in their new curbside carryout parking spaces. Saturday morning, I rewarded myself after an at-home workout with a bagel to-go from The Bagel Baker.
Most recently, I took advantage of Bay Local’s online ordering system and curbside carry out. Seconds after pulling up and giving my name, I was driving away with my food. I took some time to escape my apartment/new office and ate my lunch in a semi-isolated spot on the beach. The crispy BLT and tater tots, complemented by the sights and sounds of the ocean, made for a great mid-day break.
Another important aspect of supporting these local restaurants is tipping. I know tipping can be a controversial topic, especially when getting takeout. Now, more than ever, we have to tip well at these establishments we love so much. While many of us are working from home, hardworking people are still coming to work to make us amazing meals that brighten our days (and fill our stomachs) during these dark times. Show these restaurants and their staff members your appreciation by tipping 25% or more, if you can.
“We hope that by participating in Virginia is for Restaurant Lovers Takeout Week, Virginians will be reminded about the fantastic food options right in our backyard and how important they are to localities and their citizens, especially during this time,” said Rita McClenny, president and CEO of VTC.
